Carved Glass Sign

Classic Glass recently completed a carved glass sign for the Central Intelligence Agency’s Information Operations Center. This division of the CIA evaluates foreign threats to US computer systems, particularly those that support critical infrastructures. This particular carved glass sign is sculpted on glass that is 48″ in diameter and hung with aluminum standoffs. The technique is generally referred to as multi-stage deep carving; each area is literally sculpted by hand to create a dramatic depth effect. Carved glass can also be in-filled with paint or shaded with various etched densities to further add dimension. Classic Glass is often commissioned to produce carved glass signs for various government agencies around the Washington, DC area. Our state of the art technology and superior craftsmanship ensure exacting reproduction of logos and seals to be used as architectural signage.

Stained Glass Restoration

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

For hundreds of years, stained glass windows have been a fundamental design element of churches and cathedrals. Besides being colorful and attractive, these beautiful works of art often tell a story to anyone who views them. Stained glass remains popular in Liturgical settings, homes and offices, dramatically transforming a space  into a wonderfully inviting environment. Doors, windows, sidelights and skylights are just a few of the many applications well suited for stained/leaded glass. Stained glass can also be encapsulated within an insulated glass unit which will increase energy efficiency and aid in the protection of the stained glass itself.

Classic Glass has offered stained glass restoration for over 29 years. Our expert craftsmen have repaired everything from Tiffany lamps to large scale cathedral windows. In some cases leaded glass can be repaired in place, however extensive restoration requires that the glass be removed and brought to our facility. An evaluation must be conducted to assess the damage and labor involved and an estimate will be provided .

The images shown are from a recent stained glass restoration performed at our studio in Virginia. One challenging aspect of this repair was that the original glass used was no longer available. Artist, Rudi Waros “plated” two pieces of glass (blue opalescent + clear textured iridescent) to achieve a nearly perfect match. In addition, Rudi built the wooden frame. Authentic stained glass fabricated at Classic Glass is hand cut and assembled using traditional techniques. We stock a large selection of cathedral and opalescent glass including many clear textures.

After all these years

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Twenty-nine years ago today Robert O’ Toole and I opened the doors of Classic Glass and sos began our art glass adventure. We’ve come a long way from our original studio in Old Town, Alexandria where Robert and I did it all. Over time our small glass shop grew to become the areas leading decorative glass manufacturer. Building upon those early etching and stained glass services, we moved to our current location and expanded production to include custom laminated glass, backpainted glass and cast glass. “The opportunity to collaborate with so many talented architectural and design professionals has been a wonderful experience. It allowed our company to leave a legacy by creating many high profile works of art at DC’s most famous landmarks. Although running a small business certainly has its challenges, I still love coming to work everyday and look forward to the next twenty-nine years. A very sincere thank you goes out to all of our friends and associates for your business and support. Most of all I would like to thank my many loyal and talented co-workers, past and present. I could not do it without you!”
